Alexander Shorokhoff: Imaginative Luxury Watches

Watches from Alexander Shorokhoff outdo the competition with high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and their avant-garde influence. The brand specializes in strictly-limited stainless steel watches, some with extravagant complications.

Luxury Under the Avant-Garde Banner

Alexander Shorokhov founded his company in Alzenau, Germany in 1992, immediately taking up post as CEO and designer. Initially, the business strategy was to act as a sales company for the Russian watch maker Poljot, but the brand had already developed into a small manufacturer by 1994. Since 2002, the Alexander Shorokhoff brand has been enriching the watch world with imaginative, avant-garde creations that can't be found elsewhere. These timepieces are often limited to just a few copies, or are even one-of-a-kind pieces. However, Alexander Shorokhoff watches are reasonably priced, despite the exclusivity.

The Alexander Shorokhoff catalog contains the Avantgarde, Heritage, and Vintage collections. The Avantgarde series offers the largest variety; it's where the brand's design team flexes its creative muscles. The manufacturer also dedicates models to some influential figures. For example, on their 30th anniversary, Alexander Shorokhoff unveiled the colorful "Crazy Balls" and "Crazy Eyes" models in honor of painter Gustav Klimt. And as a tribute to the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, Alexander Shorokhoff offers a selection of watches under his name, all of which feature a roulette motif on their dials.

You will find imaginative and elaborately-finished watches in the Babylonian series. This collection is a nod to Babylonian and Egyptian astrology. The Tourbillon line has found favor with fans of intricate complications and precious metals, while the Vintage collection offers a smaller selection of classic, more simplistic timepieces.

As for technology, Alexander Shorokhoff uses calibers from ETA and Sellita, as well as in-house movements. The company's own calibers are featured in the more complicated (and more expensive) timepieces.

How much does an Alexander Shorokhoff watch cost?

Watches from Alexander Shorokhoff cover a wide price range, starting at around 1,300 USD and stretching all the way to 55,000 USD. In the lower price segment, you'll find the manual, three-hand Lucky 8-2 from the Vintage collection. Chronographs, such as the Alzenau Chrono from the Avantgarde collection, begin at about 2,700 USD. The Avantgarde Revolution, on the other hand, demands close to 5,500 USD, on account of its artistry.

If you're interested in an Alexander Shorokhoff in precious metal, take a look at the rose gold Avantgarde Crossing 2. This timepiece offers jumping seconds and costs just under 20,000 USD. The Avantgarde Tourbillon Tomorrow, also crafted from rose gold, has a much heftier price tag of 55,000 USD.

Avantgarde Collection: Details & Prices

The Avantgarde collection provides a wealth of watches. Some of them are bursting with color, and all rely on manual or automatic movements offering various functions. As the name suggests, the designs of the Avantgarde models are unusual, artistic, and in many cases playful. This is by far the most extensive series in the Shorokhoff program: There are almost 40 submodels, each of which also comes in different configurations. The following is an overview of the most important models in the Avantgarde collection.

Neva & Neva Chrono

Under the Neva moniker, Alexander Shorokhoff groups together a series of watches with dial designs inspired by the Neva River flowing through Saint Petersburg, Russia. This is achieved by a wave-shaped guilloché on the dial itself and a second hand that curves into the shape of an "N." All watches in the Neva series come in a 43.5-mm stainless steel case and are paired with leather straps matching the dial color.

The Neva is available with a navy, gold, brown, or silver dial. The wavy guilloché dial hosts applied line indices, broken up by a large "60" at the 12 o'clock position, while the date is housed above 6 o'clock. The brand's inscription at 3 can't be overlooked, nor can the small seconds with the N-shaped hand at 9 o'clock. Inside the case, you'll find the caliber AS.3105. This movement is decorated with hand engravings and tempered screws – all visible through the sapphire crystal case back.

The reference number AS.NEV01-4 has a shiny brown dial intended to evoke the Amber Room of the Catherine Palace near Saint Petersburg. This version is limited to 49 copies and, like the other Neva models, sells for around 1,500 USD on Chrono24.

Crazy Balls & Crazy Eyes

The watches in the Crazy Balls and Crazy Eyes series live up to their names. The four timepieces are inspired by the works of painter Gustav Klimt and feature colorful and playful designs. Alexander Shorokhoff presented the watches on the brand's 30th anniversary in 2022. All watches share a 39-mm stainless steel case, which is gold-plated on the Crazy Eyes ref. AS.LCD-CRS02. These models are powered by the automatic Sellita caliber SW200. The Crazy Balls series is limited to 88 pieces, while there are only 30 copies of each Crazy Eyes reference.

Crazy Balls watches can be paired with either a red or blue stingray leather strap, found under refs. AS.CB01-2 and AS.CB01-1, respectively. Both versions sell for around 1,900 USD.

While the Crazy Eyes with a gold-plated case is paired with a red stingray strap, the stainless steel version (ref. AS.LCD-CRS01) is equipped with a yellow strap made of the same leather. There were no listings for either version on Chrono24 in September 2023. The official list price is 2,890 EUR (approx. 3,100 USD).

Kandy – Square, Three-Hand Watches

The three-hand watches in the Kandy collection strike their own path with their 41-mm square stainless steel cases with rounded corners. Alexander Shorokhoff divides the series into the Kandy, Kandy Avantgarde, Classic, and Guilloche subseries. These watches use either the ETA 2892 or Sellita SW300 with a power reserve of 48 or 42 hours, respectively.

If you search for the Kandy Avantgarde 3 ref. AS.KD-AVG03, you'll find a colorful dial exploding with orange, red, blue, yellow, and green. Geometric black and white designs add even more depth to the lively dial. The case is coated in rose gold and mounted on an alligator leather strap. The recommended retail price for this model, which is limited to 53 pieces, is 3,265 EUR (approx. 3,500 USD).

The dial design of the Kandy Avantgarde 2 (ref. AS.KD-AVG02) is virtually identical to that of the Avantgarde 3, except that its case is coated in black. Limited to 100 pieces, the watch is worn on a two-tone calfskin strap. In September 2023, there was one listing for this model on Chrono24 for 3,800 USD.

The Kandy variants in the Classic series are much more restrained than the Avantgarde watches. You can choose between traditionally designed dials in silver (ref. AS.KD01-10G) or black (ref. AS.KD02-40S). These models feature Alexander Shorokhoff's characteristic hour markers, i.e., the number 60 at 12 o'clock, a 20 at 4, and 40 at 7. The rest of the indices are narrow lines. The manufacturer placed the date above 6 o'clock, and pairs the case with an alligator leather strap. Prices for new copies range from 2,700 to 3,100 USD.

The dial and bracelet of the Kandy Guilloche ref. AS.KD02-3E shine in a rich red. This watch is dedicated to the Russian avant-garde artist Wassily Kandinsky. As the name gives away, the dial is guilloché, giving it a three-dimensional texture. The case is coated in black with recessed red enamel stripes. Plan to spend around 3,400 USD for a copy in mint condition.

Alexander Shorokhoff offers two more versions under the simpler name "Kandy." The ref. AS.KD02-4G comes in a black case with a black guilloché dial featuring rose-gold plated hands and indices. This model is paired with a cognac alligator leather strap and demands around 3,200 USD. Meanwhile, the Kandy ref. AS.KD01-2G has a champagne dial paired with black hands and indices. Prices are similar to the black Kandy.

Sixtythree – An Ode to the 1960s

You will find the Sixtythree series in the Avantgarde collection. To no surprise, these watches pay tribute to horological trends in the 1960s. All watches have a round, 40-mm stainless steel case topped with a cylindrical sapphire crystal, and are available with a blue, green, bordeaux, or black dial. Nestled among the white printed indices are the brand's hallmark Arabic numerals 20, 40, and 60. These are rose gold-plated and applied to the dial. You'll also notice the rose gold coating on the hands. The Sixtythree offers a date complication above 6 o'clock.

The Sixtythree series uses the ETA 2892 and Sellita SW300 calibers. The movement features a hand-engraved rotor finished with rose gold and tempered screws, which you can admire through the sapphire crystal case back. With the exception of the ref. AS.LA02-5M, which has a stainless steel Milanese bracelet, all versions come on a crocodile leather strap.

One of these Alexander Shorokhoff Sixtythree watches on a leather strap costs around 1,600 USD new, regardless of the dial color. Expect prices for the version mounted on the Milanese bracelet to jump to 1,800 USD.

Chrono-Regulator

The Chrono-Regulator collection offers a selection of stainless steel chronographs with a retrograde display and a 43.5-mm diameter. There are currently seven models to choose from, three of which boast a skeletonized, guilloché dial. These three models come with a rose gold (ref. AS.CR02-3), yellow gold (ref. AS.CR02-2), or silver (ref. AS.CR02-1) dial with tempered, lancette hands.

The hours, minutes, and seconds are displayed at three different positions. While the minute is placed centrally, the hour is at 6 o'clock and the seconds in a subdial at 9. There are two additional hands for the chronograph function. You also don't have to do without a date, which is located somewhat incognito below the hour display at 6 o'clock. The watches are paired with an alligator strap and powered by the manual caliber 31679.AS, which offers a 42-hour power reserve when the chronograph is not being used. Each version is limited to just 68 copies, coming in at around 6,500 USD on Chrono24.

Prices for the other four non-skeletonized models are more favorable. These come in navy (ref. AS.CR01-3), black (ref. AS.CR01-4), and white (ref. AS.CR01-2). The latter two references are only paired with leather straps, but the navy AS.CR01-3M is also available on a Milanese bracelet. In terms of calibers, the watches are identical to the skeletonized versions. Prices for new copies sit at around 2,400 USD.

Alzenau – Hometown Glory

As of September 2023, the Alzenau collection is home to two three-hand watches and two chronographs, all in stainless steel. Alexander Shorokhoff unveiled the series to celebrate the manufacturer's hometown, Alzenau, having belonged to the southern German state of Bavaria for 200 years. Each watch is limited to 100 pieces.

The three-hand watches have a 39-mm case housing either the ETA 2824-2 or Sellita SW200. The manufacturer refined the rotor and also awarded the movements tempered screws. The power reserve clocks in at 38 hours. You can view the caliber through the sapphire crystal case back.

As for the dials, you can choose between champagne and silver. The elaborate guilloché on the dial is mesmerizing, and complemented by black, applied Arabic numerals. Another eye-catching detail is the coat of arms of the city of Alzenau above 6 o'clock. The watches are worn on a leather strap, which is black on the silver version (ref. AS.ALZ03-1) and brown on the champagne dial version (ref. AS.ALZ03-2). Prices for the three-hand models in new condition come in around 1,400 USD.

The 43.5-mm chronographs follow the same design cues, except for the two subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock. As with the three-hand watches, you can choose between a champagne or silver dial. The caliber 2030.AS, complete with a rose gold-finished rotor and tempered screws, ticks away inside the case. The movement has a 38-hour power reserve and is visible through the sapphire crystal case back. The champagne dial (ref. AS.ALZ02-2) comes on a brown leather strap, while the silver version (ref. AS.ALZ02-1-Red) can be paired with a red or brown leather strap. Expect to pay around 2,700 USD for an Alzenau chronograph in mint condition.

Babylonian I & II

The Babylonian I & II series contains three stainless steel watches, two of which are called Babylonian II. These timepieces are dedicated to Babylonian and Egyptian constellations, which is why the dials are dominated by hand-engraved celestial bodies and the zodiac signs.

The Babylonian I (ref. AS.BYL01) measures 46.5 mm across. The dial hosts rose gold wave detailing meant to symbolize water. The surrounding blue mother-of-pearl ring depicts the signs of the zodiac. This motif can also be found on the back of the case, where it encircles the hand-engraved and rose gold-plated caliber 2609.AS. The Babylonian I is worn on a brown ostrich leather strap. The production run was limited to 500 pieces, one of which will set you back close to 2,600 USD.

The Babylonian II ref. AS.BYL02, limited to just 300 pieces, uses similar symbolism. However, instead of a rose gold wave, this variant has silver, intricately hand-crafted decoration. There is a dark blue ring in the center with the zodiac signs. The indices and hands are also blue. On the back, the blue ring with the zodiac signs can be seen again surrounding the caliber 2609.AS, all visible through the sapphire crystal. This reference comes on a black ostrich leather strap, while the ref. AS.BYL02-F-QR is the same watch on a blue calfskin strap. Both cost around 3,000 USD.

Other Watches From Alexander Shorokhoff

Other interesting watches from Alexander Shorokhoff can be found in the Vintage and Heritage collections. The Fedor Dostoevsky series comes under the Heritage collection. All watches have a square, stainless steel case. This time, the premise is gambling addiction, an issue that Dostoevsky often addressed in his books. Alexander Shorokhoff translates this theme on the dial with a stylized roulette game. For example, the chronograph ref. AS.FD41 has a roulette scale in black, red, and green, the typical colors of the game, in the center of its silver dial. The design continues on the back, where the roulette scale surrounds the movement.

The 44.5 × 44.5-mm watch uses the automatic Soprod 7750SORM-3H chronograph caliber with a power reserve indicator. The movement is fully hand-engraved, features tempered screws, and offers a 50-hour power reserve. Prices for the ref. AS.FD41 come in around 7,600 USD.

You will find more affordable watches outside the chronograph category. The ref. AS.FD52, for example, also features the roulette motif, but comes in a slightly smaller 43 × 43-mm case. This timepiece shows the hours and minutes centrally, and the seconds in a subdial at 6 o'clock. It uses the caliber 14069.DD (Dubois Dépraz), which is an evolution of the ETA 2892-A2. This movement sports a hand engraved rotor and tempered screws. Plan to spend around 5,300 USD on a new copy.

Vintage Collection Overview

The Vintage Collection contains the Straight & Curve, Vintage 7, and Lucky 8-2 series. You'll find a couple of three-hand watches with a round, 39.5-mm stainless steel case in the Straight & Curve line. The ref. AS.V7-SC2 features a beige dial, while the AS.V7-SC1 has a silver one. Both watches are powered by the automatic caliber 2616.2H_AS, have a 41-hour power reserve, and are limited to just 30 copies each. Prices come in around 1,300 USD new.

There are three models in the Vintage 7 collection, recognizable by their two-tone dials. You can choose between silver and green (ref. AS.V7-G), silver and bronze (ref. S.V7-RS), and silver and red (ref. AS.V7-R). All timepieces have a diameter of 39.5 mm, a stainless steel case, and are limited to 30 pieces. Like the Straight & Curve, the Vintage 7 watches use the caliber 2616.2H_AS. Prices run between 1,300 and 1,700 USD, depending on the version you opt for.

There is one model in the Lucky 8-2 line, available in a rose gold-plated or black PVD-coated stainless steel case. All four versions measure 43.5 mm across and are limited to 50 copies. The center of the dial is skeletonized and allows the wearer to gaze at the vintage automatic caliber 2614.Poljot, complete with hand engravings and other decorative elements. The movement offers the standard time display of hours, minutes, and seconds, and has a 42-hour power reserve. The handset comes in either red or yellow. You can buy the Lucky 8-2 on Chrono24 for around 1,500 USD in mint condition.
