Konstantin Chaykin – Russian Haute Horlogerie

Konstantin Chaykin is a prestigious Russian luxury watch brand famous for its unique designs and unusual complications. Watches like the Joker are particularly popular with watch fans.

Wrist Monsters and Outsized Moon Phase Displays

Konstantin Chaykin was founded in 2003 by Konstantin Jurjewitsch Tschaikin in St. Petersburg, Russia, and is one of the few internationally respected Russian watch brands dedicated to haute horlogerie. Since 2008, Chaikin has been the only Russian member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants, or AHCI (Academy of Independent Creators in Watchmaking).

Konstantin Chaykin is famed for producing watches with unusual, sometimes unprecedented complications. For instance, the manufacturer has introduced timepieces featuring an Orthodox Easter calendar, a Muslim calendar (Hijra), and watches that use the ancient Jewish time units Halakim and Regaim. The brand’s catalog is also home to models with outsized 3D moon phase displays and moving images.

Konstantin Chaykin became known to the wider public in 2017 thanks to its first Wristmon (Wrist Monster) model, the Joker. This collection of "watches with a face" have since grown into an impressive line offering a wide range of creature creations, from Dracula and the Minions to the Smilodon and Minotaur.

Konstantin Chaykin manufactures its watches in strictly limited production numbers, which means they're not mass-produced, but rather exclusive timepieces. Depending on the model, the manufacturer equips their watches with either in-house calibers or movements from ETA, Sellita, or Vaucher, that have been refined with the brand’s own modules. The movements are housed in stainless steel, titanium, or gold cases.

How much do Konstantin Chaykin watches cost?

You can buy Konstantin Chaykin watches on Chrono24 for between 6,500 and 87,000 USD. However, particularly rare models can change hands for well over 100,000 USD.

The entry-level price segment includes watches the Le Régulateur Time Eater, which Konstantin Chaykin introduced to the market in collaboration with Louis Erard.

The most affordable version of the Joker is the Behrens x Konstantin Chaykin Joker, which will set you back about 11,000 USD. Other timepieces from the Wristmon collection demand an investment of between 28,000 and 62,00 USD.

If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line model with a tourbillion, skeletonized movement, and GMT display, be prepared to invest between 120,000 and 158,000 USD.

Joker & Co.: Monsters For Your Wrist

The Wristmons, i.e., little monsters for your wrist, are among Konstantin Chaykin's most popular and best-known timepieces – especially the Joker, with which the brand kick-offed the collection in 2017.

The watches are characterized by the fact that they literally have a face. The disc-shaped hour and minute displays at 10 and 2 o'clock form the eyes. A large moon phase display located in the lower part of the dial forms the mouth of the wrist monster, while crowns located at 3 and 9 o'clock serve as ears. The inspiration for the Joker is the villain of the same name from the Batman comics. The resulting effect hovers somewhere between playful and disturbing.

The manufacturer has produced various versions of the Joker, which differ from the original model primarily in terms of their color schemes. The differences are most evident in the Joker models that Konstantin Chaykin created in collaboration with the Chinese watch manufacturer Behrens. Here, a crescent-shaped seconds indicator replaces the moon phase display.

Other Wristmons

The Joker now has a whole range of sidekicks, including various clowns and harlequins, Santa Claus, Dracula, Minions, and the Mouse King. Close allies include the Minotaur and Smilodon. The latter has a weekday display instead of a "laughing" moon phase, located in the mouth of the saber-toothed cat. The individual days of the week are represented by prehistoric prey inside the mouth of the cat, and the mouth itself serves as a 24-hour indicator that opens and closes accordingly.

If you’d prefer something spookier, take a look at the Louis Erard x Konstantin Chaykin Le Régulateur. The design of this watch was inspired by the creepy one-eyed Licho, a character from Slavic fairy tales. The hour subdial at 12 o'clock serves as the eye. The minutes are indicated by a central curved hand that extends across the entire dial. There’s a seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, made to resemble the creature's open mouth.

Konstantin Chaykin Cinema: Watch With Moving Pictures

The Konstantin Chaykin Cinema pays homage to the early days of cinematography. The rectangular case of the watch is strongly reminiscent of classic cameras like the Rolleiflex, and the in-house caliber K.06-0, which is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, was inspired by the inner workings of a film camera.

The highlight of the Cinema, however, is a small round window below the time display. Here, the watch plays a small animation at the touch of a button – namely a galloping horse. The English photographer Eadweard Muybridge ushered in the age of moving pictures with this very sequence in 1878, when he amazed the world with his Zoopraxiscope. The animation is started by a push-piece at 9 o'clock. The playback mechanism has its own barrel, which is wound together with that of the regular movement via a crown at 3 o'clock.

Konstantin Chaykin Mars Conqueror

In 2019, Konstantin Chaykin introduced the Mars Conqueror collection, intended to serve astronauts on future missions to Mars. All models in the collection share a futuristic look and display not only Earth time including a second time zone but synchronized Mars time as well.

The original version of the Mars Conqueror has a trapezoid case with three separate dials. The central display shows the home time on Earth. You can also see a second time zone here with an additional GMT hand. To the left of the Earth time display is a dial for Mars time. The display to the right of the Earth time indicator shows the current distance between Earth and Mars. The watch is set and wound using a crown located at 6 o'clock and three adjustment screws on the back.

The current version of the Mars Conqueror is also a trapezoid, but looks much more angular than earlier variants. The displays have also changed. The home time on Earth is now shown centrally, the second time zone on a sub-dial at 12 o'clock, and Mars time on a subdial at 6 o'clock. Konstantin Chaykin omitted the distance indicator. Another interesting detail on the current version are the two vertical crowns on the front of the case. One is used to set the different times and wind the watch, while the other is used to select the function to be set.

Other Konstantin Chaykin Watches

One of Konstantin Chaykin's specialties is watches with unusual calendars. These include the Hijra and the Decalogue. The former is an Islamic annual calendar based on lunar cycles and, at 354 or 355 days, is significantly shorter than the usual solar calendar. Deviations from the actual lunar cycle are compensated for by leap years.

The Decalogue is based on the ancient Jewish calendar. One hour consists of 1,080 steps (halakim), which in turn are divided into 76 smaller steps (regaim). This way of measuring time is also based on the cycle of the Moon. As the system has a very high resolution due to its many steps, the lunar cycle can be determined with extreme accuracy. The deviation of the calendar from the actual course of the Earth's moon is therefore only 0.45 seconds.

The Decalogue has a moon phase display and a lunar calendar. The hands of the watch's time display also move counterclockwise, in accordance with the Hebrew alphabet, which is read from right to left.

Konstantin Chaykin Lunokhod: Outsized 3D Moon Phase Display

The Konstantin Chaykin Lunokhod – named after the unmanned lunar vehicle with which the Soviet Union explored the Moon in the early 1970s – is all about the moon phase. This futuristic timepiece features a 12-mm, three-dimensional display at the center. The upper half of the sphere frames a retrograde hour display. Opposite this, at 6 o'clock, is a display for the minutes.

The different phases of the moon are displayed using a hemisphere that rotates around the stylized moon. The result is much more realistic than a conventional moon phase display.

Konstantin Chaykin Levitas & Carpe Diem: Transience & Magic

The Latin word “levitas” means to float, and that is exactly what the hands of the Konstantin Chaykin Levitas seem to do. The off-center dial, which takes up a good two-thirds of the watch at 9 o'clock, is completely transparent, and the hands at the center move as if by magic, as there is no visible movement. What looks like magic at first glance is, on closer inspection, a horological masterpiece: the movement is hidden at the edge of the display, and the power is transmitted to the hands via a sapphire crystal disc.

The dial of the Konstantin Chaykin Carpe Diem is dominated by a depiction of Chronos, the father of time. He is enthroned, sickle in hand, on a subdial indicating the hours. The minutes are displayed via a stylized hourglass at 9 o'clock. The days of the week are represented by astrological symbols, shown in a window located at 3 o'clock.
