One of the rarest Submariners, special order for French Polynesia.

The reference was produced from 1988 to 2010. 16610 was long considered the most accomplished and reliable of all Submariner models. Although the production period of 22 years is particularly long, our example is all the more surprising as it comes from the smallest series among the most produced references: the Submariner.
Our watch comes from a set of 3 pieces that were delivered exclusively to French Polynesia.
Limited edition and numbered 2/3 on the back, our piece bears a particularly rare and unlikely double signature on the dial: "Polynesian Directory".
Only 3 examples were delivered with this dial configuration. The order was placed by Rolex in 1999 at the request of the official Rolex dealer in New Caledonia. The authorized dealer undertook not to sell these special models in mainland France.
The Polynesian Directory, originally called opt (Office des Postes et Télécommunication), is the historic public operator of French Polynesia, responsible for postal, telecommunications and financial services. Founded in 1956, opt received its new name in 1999.
Everything suggests that this version of the "Polynesian Directory" was invented to celebrate this new identity, synonymous with the transition to a new modernity.
This model, which should never have left the island, is presented for the first time on public sale.
An exchange of letters between Rolex and its current owner, in which these details are mentioned, is enclosed with the watch and will be given to the future owner.
