Description

The Rolex Submariner "Kermit" is the most famous of the non-standard Submariner models. That's for a good reason - when it launched in 2003, the idea of a vibrant green bezel on what was supposed to be a practical tool watch was one that took many by surprise. But it's a demonstration of Rolex's staying power that it quickly became a modern icon, rather than being forgotten as a quirky reference. And like any Rolex, it's picked up a nickname.

The four-digit and five-digit Submariners (named for the length of their reference numbers) almost always featured aluminium bezel inserts. While these were more prone to scratching than their later ceramic counterparts, they are also much easier to replace. They also give the watch a more practical, less 'polished' feel.

Rolex's Submariner is to many the definitive wristwatch. From its origins as a diver's companion and James Bond's wristwatch, the Submariner has ingrained itself into popular culture like no watch before or since. Worn and loved by bankers, rappers and watch enthusiasts alike, the Submariner possibly the most culturally significant piece of horology ever.

This doesn't mean it's all talk and no action though - the Submariner is iconic for a reason. Its water resistant Oyster case, highly legible Mercedes hands and timing bezel may have originated as practical functions, but they've come together to create a beautifully proportioned watch that appeals as much to the designer's eye as it does to the procurement officer's spec sheet.
